Your Irish host family

Every host family is different, in the same way every student is different. Irish people are known to be friendly and welcoming, and all our families are thoroughly screened, so you should fit right into your family.

Living with the Irish

Your Irish host family will welcome you with open arms. Our host families come from a variety of different locations and backgrounds, and all of them are thoroughly screened by EF. All EF host families in Ireland receive a small stipend to host an exchange student. Many families have children your age; others have younger children, adult children or no children at all.

Share Irish traditions with your host family

During your exchange year, you might get to participate in birthday parties, family dinners or traditional Irish holiday celebrations, like St. Patrick’s Day. Like everyone in the family you should help out around the house, just like you probably already do at home.

Supportive family environment

Because living and studying abroad is such a new and rewarding experience, it helps to live in a supportive family environment where you will feel comfortable and at home. Ireland has a young population, so there is a good chance you will live with other teenagers, though nothing is certain because each family is different. One thing is for sure - your host family will be an important part of your exchange year in Ireland.
